Half In, Half Out of the Beetle Zone

Tree Service in Auburn has one question that most towns don't have: is your street inside the Asian longhorned beetle regulated area? As of the state's September 2026 update, the regulated area includes all of Worcester, Boylston and West Boylston, and only a portion of Auburn. The federal boundary description follows named roads, including Auburn Street, Oxford Street and the Massachusetts Turnpike, so two neighbors a few blocks apart can be on different sides of the line.

Why the line matters for your job

If your property is inside, host wood such as maple, birch, elm and willow should not be moved out of the regulated area, and brush is best chipped where it falls. If you are outside, ordinary firewood rules apply, including the statewide emerald ash borer quarantine on ash. Before we schedule a removal in Auburn, we look up where the address sits and plan the cleanup accordingly. The USDA regulated area document is updated as the program shrinks, so we check the current version rather than relying on memory.

A town that stays put

Census figures show that 96.0% of Auburn residents lived in the same house a year earlier, and about 20.9% are 65 or older. Long ownership means mature yard trees, many planted when the houses were new, now well over the roofline. For older owners, a pruning plan every few years is often easier than a large, urgent removal after a storm. We can mark trees by priority so the work can be done over more than one visit.

Pakachoag Hill

Auburn's best-known hill is Pakachoag, where Robert Goddard launched the first liquid-fueled rocket from his aunt's farm on March 16, 1926. The site is now marked on a golf course. The town sits at about 604 feet, with rolling ground that makes some backyards slope sharply toward the street. On slopes, we pay attention to where a tree will want to roll or slide once it is cut, and we set up rigging so pieces land where planned.

  • Removing declining maples and oaks close to houses
  • Thinning and deadwood removal over driveways and decks
  • Stump grinding after removals so lawns can be reseeded
  • Checking ash trees for emerald ash borer damage
  • Cleanup after wind and wet snow

Auburn Questions

How do I know if my house is in the beetle regulated area?

The USDA publishes a boundary description that follows specific roads. We check your address against the current version before the job, and the state's ALB program at 508-852-8090 can confirm it.

If I am inside the zone, what happens to the wood?

Brush is chipped on site and logs stay within the regulated area. You can keep wood from your own tree for use at home after checking it for beetle signs; it just can't be taken out of the zone.

Can you split a big job over two visits?

Yes. Many Auburn owners prefer to handle the most urgent tree first and plan the rest for a later season. The estimate will show each tree separately so you can choose.

Do you grind stumps on sloped yards?

Yes. Pakachoag and other Auburn hills leave plenty of sloped backyards. A grinder can work on moderate slopes, and we note any steep spots in the estimate along with how the grindings will be cleaned up or left as mulch.

Is there anything special about ash trees here?

All of Massachusetts is under the emerald ash borer quarantine, and the beetle has been confirmed in hundreds of communities. Ash with thinning crowns or bark stripped by woodpeckers is usually in decline and becomes brittle, so it is worth having checked.
