Pruning for Worcester Winters

Tree trimming and pruning in Worcester is mostly about winter. Ice and wet snow load every limb, and the ones that fail are predictable: long horizontal limbs over roofs, tight V-shaped forks, branches with old wounds, and crowns so dense they hold snow like a sail. Good pruning reduces that load where it matters and leaves the rest of the tree alone. It is not the same as cutting a tree back hard, and it should never mean topping, which Worcester's tree ordinance prohibits on public trees except in limited cases.

What the standard says

The tree care industry follows ANSI A300, the American National Standard for pruning. In practice that means cutting just outside the branch collar instead of flush with the trunk, removing a branch back to a lateral large enough to take over, and not stripping out interior growth. ISA guidance generally cautions against removing more than about a quarter of a tree's live foliage in one season. We describe the work in those terms on the quote: which limbs, what kind of cut, and why.

Common pruning jobs on Worcester lots

  • Deadwood removal. Dead branches fall in the first good wind. Removing them is the simplest way to make a mature tree safer.
  • Roof and porch clearance. Limbs touching a roof or rubbing a third-floor porch rail are cut back to a proper lateral.
  • Service-drop clearance. National Grid trims around its high-voltage lines, but the low-voltage wire to your house is the owner's responsibility. When branches are close, National Grid can sleeve or disconnect the wire so the work can be done safely.
  • Crown thinning and reduction. Selected limbs are removed or shortened to cut weight and wind resistance on trees that hang over the house.
  • Young-tree structural pruning. Trees planted in the years after the beetle removals are reaching the size where a few cuts can set up one strong central leader and prevent the weak forks that fail later.

Timing

For most deciduous trees, the dormant season from late fall to early spring is a good time: leaves are off, structure is easy to see and the tree has the spring to begin closing wounds. Spring-flowering trees such as cherries are often pruned right after they bloom. Oaks are best pruned while dormant, because fresh wounds in spring and early summer can attract the beetles that carry oak wilt, a disease the city's master plan lists as a threat to its street trees. Dead or broken limbs should come out whenever you find them.

Street trees

If the tree is on the sidewalk strip, it is likely a public shade tree. Worcester's ordinance requires the tree warden's written approval before anyone other than the city's own crews prunes it, so we check that first.

Typical Jobs

Each pruning job is written up limb by limb, so you know exactly what will be cut.

Deadwood removal

Dead, broken and hanging limbs taken out of the crown.

Clearance pruning

Branches cut back from roofs, siding, porches, driveways and the service drop.

Crown thinning

Selective removal of interior limbs to cut weight and let wind through.

Crown reduction

Structural pruning

Training young trees to one leader and well-spaced branches.

Tree Trimming & Pruning Questions

When is the best time to prune trees in Worcester?

For most shade trees, late fall through early spring while they are dormant. Prune oaks only in the dormant season to avoid attracting the beetles that spread oak wilt, and prune cherries and other spring bloomers right after they flower. Dead or broken limbs can come out any time.

How much does tree trimming cost?

National guides put typical tree trimming at about $255 to $655, with trees over 30 feet often between about $316 and $1,104. A big maple over a three-decker roof is usually at the upper end. We price the specific cuts in writing.

Can you cut the branches near my power line?

Branches near the service wire to your house are your responsibility, and we can prune them, sometimes after National Grid sleeves or disconnects the wire, which takes at least five days' notice. Branches near the high-voltage lines on the poles are National Grid's job.

Will thinning help my tree survive an ice storm?

It helps. Removing deadwood, shortening long limbs over the house and correcting weak forks reduces how much weight the tree carries and where it can fail. Nothing makes a tree storm-proof, but the December 2008 ice storm showed which trees break first.

Can I prune the city tree in front of my house?

Not without the tree warden's written approval. Worcester's ordinance limits work on public shade trees to the tree warden, the city's crews and contractors, or an ISA-certified arborist the warden authorizes. Call 311 to ask for an inspection.
