Northbridge's Mill Villages
Tree Service in Northbridge often happens around homes built for the Whitin Machine Works. The company was based in town from 1831 to 1964 and was, at its peak, the largest manufacturer of textile machinery in the world. The housing built for its workers in Whitinsville still defines the village: rows of similar homes, close together, with large trees planted along the streets and in the small yards behind them.
Tight lots, big trees
On mill-village lots, a large maple or oak may be within a few feet of two houses. Felling it in one piece is rarely an option. We take trees like that down in sections, lowering each piece by rope, and we plan where the chipper and truck will go before the job starts. In the estimate, we note any part of the work that needs a neighbor's driveway or yard for access.
Two rivers
The Blackstone and Mumford Rivers run through Northbridge, and mills were built along their banks in the early 1800s. Many have since been converted to apartments and businesses. Trees along the rivers include silver maples, willows and box elders that grow fast in wet soil and have brittle wood. If they hang over a house or a parking area, they are worth checking.
Villages and outskirts
Northbridge includes Whitinsville, Linwood, Rockdale and Riverdale, along with smaller areas like Northbridge Center and Plummer's Corner. The outskirts have horse farms and woods, and the West Hill Dam reservoir is within town limits. Lookout Rock overlooks the river below. Trees on those larger, outlying properties tend to be at the edge of fields or woods.
Ownership and density
Census figures show about 946 people per square mile in 2020 and an owner-occupancy rate of 70.5%. The mix of owners and renters means we sometimes work with landlords and property managers on multi-family lots as well as with individual homeowners.
Street trees on private lots
In Whitinsville, many of the trees along the sidewalk were planted in front yards rather than in the public way, so they belong to the property owner. Others sit on the boundary of the road and count as public shade trees under state law, which means only the tree warden can cut or trim them without permission. Before we work on a tree near the street, we confirm which it is.
Wood and chips
We chip brush on site and can leave the chips for garden beds, or haul them away. Logs can be cut for firewood and stacked. Northbridge is outside the Asian longhorned beetle regulated area, but ash is still covered by the statewide emerald ash borer quarantine.

Northbridge Questions
Can you take down a tree between two mill houses?
Yes. We do it in sections, lowering each piece by rope, so nothing lands on the houses. If access requires a neighbor's yard or driveway, we'll note that in the estimate.
I'm a landlord with several properties in Whitinsville. Can you quote them together?
Yes. We can visit each property and give you written estimates by address, so you can decide which work to do and when.
Are the trees along the river dangerous?
Not necessarily, but fast-growing riverbank species often have weaker wood and shallow roots in wet soil. Large limbs over buildings or parking areas are worth having checked.
Do you work in Linwood and Rockdale?
Yes. We cover all of Northbridge's villages and the outlying roads.
Is the big tree at the edge of my front yard mine or the town's?
Trees in the public way or on its boundary are public shade trees, under the tree warden. Trees clearly inside your property line are yours. If it's close, the tree warden can help determine ownership.
