Wet Ground, New Owners and Old Trees
Tree Service in Westborough often starts with a new homeowner. Census figures show 80.7% of residents lived in the same house a year earlier, lower than most towns around Worcester, and the owner-occupancy rate is 61.8%. That means a steady stream of people moving into houses with mature trees they didn't plant and don't know. A first walk-around with someone who looks at trees for a living is worth it: which ones are healthy, which need pruning, and which are a risk to the house.
Two rivers start here
Westborough holds the headwaters of the Sudbury and Assabet Rivers, along with Lake Chauncy, Hocomonco Pond, Cedar Swamp Pond, the Westboro Reservoir and the George H. Nichols Reservoir. Wet ground is common, and trees in wet soil root shallowly. A red maple at the edge of a swamp can look fine and still tip over in a storm after a wet spell. Work near wetlands may also fall under the town's Conservation Commission, so check before clearing near water.
The 1953 tornado
The June 9, 1953 tornado crossed Westborough after Shrewsbury and before Southborough. Five people died in town. Its path reshaped neighborhoods, and many of the trees growing on those streets today started after it.
Older and newer neighborhoods
Westborough was incorporated in 1717 and has older streets near the center, along with developments from the late 1900s and later. Older neighborhoods tend to have big maples and oaks at the end of their lives. Newer ones have trees planted with the houses, now crowding roofs and blocking views, and white pines left from the original woods that can be shallow-rooted after construction.
Lake Chauncy and the hospital grounds
The former Westborough State Hospital, established in 1884, stands on Lyman Street north of Lake Chauncy, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Lakefront and hillside lots near the lake often have mature trees growing over the slope toward the water.
Wood from your trees
Westborough has never been part of the Asian longhorned beetle regulated area, and Shrewsbury next door was released from it in September 2026. That makes firewood from a Westborough removal simpler to handle than it was a few years ago. Ash is still the exception: the whole state is under the emerald ash borer quarantine, so ash logs should be burned locally or chipped.

Westborough Questions
We just bought a house. Should we have the trees checked?
It is a good idea, especially with large trees near the house. We can walk the property, tell you which trees look healthy, which need pruning, and which might be a risk, and put it in a written estimate you can work from.
Can I remove trees near the wetland behind my house?
Work near wetlands may need Conservation Commission approval. Check with the town before cutting. Once you know what is allowed, we can plan the work to stay within it.
Why did a healthy-looking tree fall over in the last storm?
Trees in wet soil root shallowly, and saturated ground can let a whole root plate lift in strong wind. If the soil has cracked or heaved near a tree's base, call us.
Do you grind stumps left by the previous owner?
Yes. Old stumps are easier to grind once they have started to soften. We can grind below grade so you can plant grass or a garden over the spot.
Is Westborough in the Asian longhorned beetle zone?
No. The remaining regulated area covers Worcester, Boylston, West Boylston and part of Auburn, according to the state's September 2026 update. Maples are still worth watching, since the beetle's preferred hosts grow here too.
