Wooded Lots and Weather on the Hills

Tree Service in Holden usually means bigger lots and more trees per property than you find in Worcester. The town covers about 35 square miles of land, and at 2020 it had roughly 567 people per square mile, so many homes back up to woods, stone walls and the hills around the Quinapoxet River. With 85.3% of homes owner-occupied and 95.1% of residents living in the same house a year earlier, the trees here tend to belong to people who plan to stay with them.

The light department does more than wires

The Holden Municipal Light Department handles forestry for the electric lines and also for trees on town property, such as those along roads and in parks. The town's own guidance says that public shade trees may not be cut, trimmed or removed by anyone other than the tree warden or a deputy, and that this applies even to the owner of the land, unless the tree warden gives a written permit. If a roadside tree in front of your house worries you, the Tree Warden is the first call. Trees farther back on your lot are yours, and that is where we come in.

Ice and elevation

Holden sits at about 860 feet. In the December 11-12, 2008 ice storm, the National Weather Service reported widespread ice of half an inch to an inch across interior northern Massachusetts, with local amounts up to an inch and a half, and noted that northeast-facing upslope areas in Worcester County iced more than surrounding areas. Holden's hills fit that description. Birch, white pine and long-limbed maples break under that load. Pruning that reduces long, heavy limbs and removes weak, narrow forks can lower the odds of a branch failing onto a roof.

Brush rules in town

Holden has been out of the Asian longhorned beetle regulated area since 2025. The town's composting program has accepted leaves and grass at the former landfill on River Street and brush between 1 and 6 inches in diameter at the Adams Road Garage on set Saturdays, for residents only, with no commercial loads, stumps, roots or briars. Bigger wood and stumps are a homeowner's job to deal with, which is where chipping, log hauling and stump grinding come in.

What we do on Holden properties

  • Hazard reviews of trees that lean toward the house, driveway or a neighbor's yard
  • Removal of white pines and hardwoods at the edge of the woods
  • Reduction pruning on large maples and oaks over roofs
  • Storm cleanup after ice, wet snow or wind
  • Stump grinding, including stumps left behind from earlier storms
  • Clearing small areas for a shed, garden or better sun

How it works

Call (508) 731-3691 or use the form, and tell us whether the tree is near the road. We will help figure out whether it is a public shade tree, quote the work on your private trees in writing, and explain how we plan to get wood out of a backyard that may be well away from the street. Holden Questions

Who takes care of the big tree at the edge of the road?

If it stands in the public way or on its boundary, it is likely a public shade tree, and the town says only the tree warden or deputy can cut or trim it without a written permit. Contact the Tree Warden first. Everything else on your lot we can quote.

Can the town take my logs?

The town's composting program has taken brush between 1 and 6 inches thick from residents on set days, but not stumps, roots or commercial loads. For larger wood, we can cut it to firewood length and stack it, or haul it away, whichever you choose in the estimate.

My birches bent over in the last ice storm. Will they recover?

Young, flexible birches often straighten on their own over a season or two. Older trunks that stay bent, or that cracked, rarely do and can fail later. We can look at each one and tell you which to keep.

Do I still need to worry about the Asian longhorned beetle?

Holden is no longer regulated, but Worcester and West Boylston next door still are. If you see round, pencil-sized holes in a maple, report it to the state hotline at 1-866-702-9938.
