Lots of Land, Lots of Trees
Tree Service in Charlton covers a lot of ground. The town has about 42.2 square miles of land, more than any other town we serve, and only about 316 people per square mile. Many homes sit on large lots with long frontage, woods on two or three sides and stone walls from the farms that once covered the town. In the 1800s farming was the town's main occupation, and much of that land has since grown back to forest.
Three villages along Route 31
Charlton Center, Charlton City and Charlton Depot are the town's historic villages, and Route 31 runs through all three. Charlton City and Charlton Depot have their own ZIP codes. The closer-set homes in the villages have shade trees near the road, while the outlying roads have more woods and edges of former fields.
The Turnpike runs through
The Massachusetts Turnpike crosses Charlton but has no exit in town, just two service plazas. Homes near the highway and its noise barriers often have strips of woods that act as buffers. Trees in those strips can be on private property, town land or state land, so confirm ownership before any work.
Owners who stay
Census figures show 84.9% of homes are owner-occupied and 95.9% of residents lived in the same house a year earlier. The median value is $427,500. Long ownership means trees that have grown up with the house, and often several jobs that have been put off: a few dead trees at the edge of the woods, a limb over the roof and an old stump or two.
Spongy moth and oak decline
In 2017, gypsy moth (now called spongy moth) caterpillars defoliated about a third of Massachusetts' forests, with the main pockets in Worcester County between Palmer and Hopkinton. Wells State Park in neighboring Sturbridge was among the hardest-hit sites. Oaks that were stripped repeatedly, especially during the drought years before, have died back from the top in many places. Dead oaks become brittle quickly and should come down before they drop large limbs.
Stone walls and old farm trees
Along Charlton's back roads, many of the biggest trees grew up along stone walls, where farmers left them standing as field boundaries. Those trees are often old, with decay in the trunk and roots wedged between the stones. When one needs to come down, we cut it in sections and leave the base in place if pulling it would tear the wall apart.

Charlton Questions
My oaks have dead tops. What happened?
Repeated defoliation by spongy moth, along with drought, killed back many oaks in Worcester County after 2016 and 2017. Dead tops and limbs become brittle and should be removed before they fall. We can tell you whether the rest of the tree is worth keeping.
Can you clear land for a new house or garage?
Yes. We can remove the trees, chip the brush and grind the stumps so the site is ready for an excavator. Any wetland or conservation rules should be checked first.
Do you work on long driveways in rural Charlton?
Yes. We plan for long distances between the tree and the road, sometimes using smaller equipment or carrying brush to a chipper at the road.
Who owns the trees along the Turnpike?
It depends on the location. Some are on state land, some on private land. Confirm ownership before any work. We only work on trees on your property.
Can you remove a tree growing in a stone wall?
Yes. We usually cut it in sections and leave the base if removing it would damage the wall. We grind carefully around stones.
