Getting Rid of the Stump
Stump grinding is how most stumps leave a Worcester yard. A grinder with a toothed cutting wheel chews the stump and the top of the main roots into chips, a few inches at a time, until the wood is below the surface. Pulling a stump out whole takes an excavator and leaves a crater; burning or chemical rotting takes years. Grinding is faster, and on a small city lot it is usually the only practical way.
Why Worcester stumps can be slow
The city's master plan estimates that 44% of Worcester's ground is urban fill and 13% is rocky outcrop. That is good news for nobody grinding a stump. Old fill holds brick, concrete, cinders and the occasional buried foundation stone, and ledge sits shallow on many hillsides. A grinder that hits rock has to back off and change angle, which takes longer and wears the teeth. If we know the area has ledge or fill, we say so on the quote.
Access
Compact grinders can fit through a gate about three feet wide, which matters behind triple-deckers where the only way to the backyard is a side path between houses. Larger machines are faster but need a driveway or wide gate. Steep yards and retaining walls change what can be used and where it can sit. We measure access at the visit.
Before the grinder starts
Massachusetts Dig Safe requires notice at least 72 business hours before excavation, with the area premarked in white, and asks homeowners and contractors alike to call 811 when unsure. Grinding goes into the ground, and gas, water, electric and cable lines often run right past old street-side and backyard stumps. We plan the call into the schedule.
Chips, roots and what comes next
Grinding leaves a pile of chips and soil roughly the size of the stump. You can keep the chips as mulch or have them hauled away, and the hole can be filled with the grindings or topsoil. If you plan to replant in the same spot, the old roots and chips take time to break down, so a new tree usually goes a few feet to one side. Surface roots running across the lawn can be ground too, priced as a separate line.

Stump Grinding Questions
How much does stump grinding cost?
National guides put most stumps between about $140 and $525, with an average near $331. Wide stumps, rocky ground, steep yards and narrow gates push it higher, and grinding several stumps in one visit often lowers the price per stump.
How deep do you grind?
For lawn, grinding a few inches below grade is usually enough to cover with soil and seed. If you plan to put a patio, shed or garden bed there, tell us, and we will plan to go deeper where the ground allows.
Do I need to call Dig Safe for stump grinding?
Massachusetts Dig Safe asks for notice at least 72 business hours before excavation, with the area premarked in white, and says to call 811 if you are unsure whether your project counts. Because grinding goes below the surface, we plan for a ticket.
Can I take the stump to the city drop-off?
No. Worcester's yard waste sites do not accept tree stumps. Grinding on site turns the stump into chips you can use as mulch.
Will the stump grow back?
Some trees, such as Norway maple, cherry and tree of heaven, send up sprouts from the stump or roots. Grinding below grade removes most of the sprouting tissue; any sprouts that appear later can be cut or ground again.
