What Is Wrong With This Tree?
Tree health assessments matter more in Worcester than almost anywhere in New England. The city has lived with the Asian longhorned beetle since 2008, its Urban Forest Master Plan finds that at least 65% of street trees are susceptible to at least one significant pest or disease, and several new problems have arrived in Massachusetts in the last few years. A homeowner looking at a thinning crown or strange leaves usually wants to know three things: what is causing it, whether the tree is getting dangerous, and whether it can be saved.
The pests and diseases we look for
- Asian longhorned beetle. Round exit holes about the size of a dime, oval egg pits in the bark, frass and weeping sap on maples, birches, elms, willows and horse chestnuts. Suspected trees are reported to the ALB program at 1-866-702-9938, which inspects and removes infested trees itself. The 2024 federal forest health report notes that 50 traps were set in the zone that year and no beetles or infested trees were found.
- Emerald ash borer. Found in Worcester in 2016 and now in all 14 Massachusetts counties. Signs include dieback from the top, bark split or stripped by woodpeckers, and D-shaped exit holes. Some valuable ash can be protected with trunk-injected insecticide; badly declined ones cannot.
- Beech leaf disease. First found in Massachusetts in 2020 and confirmed in every county by 2024. Look for dark bands between the veins of beech leaves, then curled, leathery leaves and a thinning crown.
- Hemlock woolly adelgid. White, woolly masses at the base of hemlock needles; present in every Massachusetts county.
- Spotted lanternfly. Its first established Massachusetts population was found in Fitchburg in 2021. It favors tree of heaven and also feeds on maple and black walnut, and UMass Extension describes it as mainly a nuisance in landscapes so far.
- Spongy moth. Caterpillars that can strip oaks in outbreak years; the city plan estimates 23% to 38% of street trees are susceptible depending on the district.
Structure and decay
A healthy-looking tree can still be a risk. We look for cracks, included bark in tight forks, cavities, fungal conks, root damage from old construction or driveway work, and soil heaving on the side away from a lean. Fill soils and shallow ledge, common in Worcester, can limit rooting depth, which matters for big trees next to houses.
What you get
A verbal walk-through on site, and on request a written summary of what we found and the options: leave it and watch it, prune it, cable it, treat it, or remove it. If a problem needs a pesticide treatment, it must be applied by someone holding a Massachusetts pesticide license, and we tell you that plainly.

Tree Health Assessments Questions
Who do I call if I think I have Asian longhorned beetle?
Call the ALB hotline at 1-866-702-9938. The eradication program inspects suspect trees and removes infested ones. Do not cut or move the tree's wood before they have looked at it.
Can my ash tree be saved?
Sometimes. Ash trees that are still mostly healthy can be protected with insecticide injections applied by a licensed applicator, and published guides put tree injections at about $50 to $250 per tree. Ash with heavy dieback usually cannot be saved and becomes brittle quickly.
My beech leaves have dark stripes. What is it?
That is the classic first sign of beech leaf disease, which has been confirmed in every Massachusetts county. There is no cure yet; affected trees decline over several years. An assessment helps decide whether a beech near the house should be monitored or removed.
How can I tell if a tree is dangerous?
Warning signs include dead branches in the crown, cracks or splits in the trunk, mushrooms or conks at the base, a new lean with lifted soil, and large cavities. If a tree with any of these stands over your house, driveway or a play area, have it looked at.
Does an assessment cost money?
Looking at a tree as part of an estimate for pruning or removal is free. A detailed written report, which national guides price from about $250 to $700, is quoted separately if you want one.
