Reservoir Town, Beetle Rules

Tree Service in Boylston happens inside the Asian longhorned beetle regulated area, which the state confirmed in September 2026 still includes all of the town. The program's wood disposal and processing center is also in Boylston, at 0 Dr. Paul Ware Drive. It is only for approved or certified contractors and accepts only host wood that cannot be chipped to USDA specifications on site, so for nearly every home job the wood is chipped right in the yard.

What that means at your house

If we remove a maple, birch, elm, willow or other host tree, the brush is chipped on the spot and the logs either stay with you, inside the regulated area, or go through approved channels. Wood from your own tree can be used as firewood at home if it shows no beetle signs. It cannot go to a camp in Maine or a relative's house in New Hampshire. That rule surprises people, so we put it in writing in the estimate.

The reservoir changed the town

Boylston was the North Parish of Shrewsbury until it was incorporated in 1786. Today, about 18.5% of its total area is water, mostly the Wachusett Reservoir in the northwest part of town. The reservoir, part of the water system serving Greater Boston, ended the town's Nashua River mills when it was built. Homes near the shoreline often border protected watershed land, with dense woods behind the lawn. Trees along that edge lean toward light, drop limbs into yards and can be on either side of the property line.

Older population, larger lots

Census figures show that 22.0% of Boylston residents are 65 or older and 95.7% were living in the same house a year earlier. With about 302 people per square mile, lots are larger than in nearby towns, and many owners would rather not handle a chainsaw. We often see deferred work: several trees that have needed attention for years, now worth addressing in one visit.

Gardens and specimen trees

Tower Hill Botanic Garden, run by the Worcester County Horticultural Society, sits in Boylston, and many local homeowners take their own plantings seriously. When we prune around ornamental beds, we protect them with mats and drop zones and say in advance where the chipper will be.

Typical work

  • Host-tree removals with all brush chipped on site
  • Deadwood and clearance pruning over houses and outbuildings
  • Trees along the edge of watershed woods
  • Stump grinding
  • Storm cleanup after wind, ice and wet snow

The town's own electric utility, the Boylston Municipal Light Department, should be called first for any tree on a wire. For everything else, call (508) 731-3691 or send the form for a written estimate. Get a free estimate

Boylston Questions

Can I drop my own brush at the ALB disposal center?

No. The city's beetle page says the center is for approved or certified contractors only and accepts only host wood that cannot be chipped on site. Homeowner brush is normally chipped in the yard.

Do I need permission to remove a tree on my own lot?

Not for an ordinary private tree away from the road. Trees in or on the boundary of the public way are public shade trees, which fall under the tree warden and Chapter 87. Wetland or watershed rules may also apply near water, so ask before cutting close to the reservoir.

Can you keep wood for my fireplace?

Yes. We can cut it to length and stack it. Wood from your own tree can be burned at home in the regulated area after you check it for beetle signs. It just can't leave the zone.

What should I look for on my maples?

Round exit holes about the size of a pencil, oozing sap from small wounds, and coarse sawdust at the base or in branch crotches. Report those signs to the hotline at 1-866-702-9938.
